Jahmal Matenga-Wilson came to AM Group company Austral Monsoon through Challenge Employment and Training to complete the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, however his path before reaching us involved many struggles.
Jahmal didn’t have the easiest childhood and during this time he missed four years of schooling. On top of that Jahmal has a hearing disability which requires him to wear a hearing aid 24/7. Jahmal’s hearing disability was big barrier for him to overcome, but he didn’t let it hinder him from applying to workshop programs.
In 2010, Jahmal and his family moved over to Australia from New Zealand and by this time Jahmal had decided that he really wanted to go back to finish school but unfortunately many schools refused entry as he was too far behind. Jahmal was then referred to Boystown. After a couple months at Boystown, they referred him to Redbank Plains High where after an interview with the Principal they agreed to accept him and suggested that he go down a grade to catch up on his learning.
After Jahmal proudly graduated school, he wanted to take it a step further and go to university but unfortunately the financial barriers prevented him. This is where Jahmal found Challenge Employment and the Engineering Program. Throughout Jahmal’s studies here, he faced some physical barriers. There was times where the physical and mental aspects of the program were a great challenge for Jahmal.
Hans Kummerhel, the Production Manager at Austral Monsoon Queensland, went to Challenge Employment and explained that he needed someone who he could train to do some programming on our CNC Machines. Without hesitation Challenge Employment put Jahmal forward knowing that his strong suit is maths! Jahmal then came to Austral Monsoon for an interview and amazed Hans with his high level of maths, problem solving skills and his ability to use the program so quickly. Later that day, Hans hand picked Jahmal to be trained as the CNC Machinist trainee. To keep this position Jahmal kept working hard on developing his skill set as part of his traineeship. Hans says that Jahmal is now turning out to be one fantastic employee at Austral Monsoon. This was of course a massive achievement for Jahmal!
Jahmal says he is also very thankful to Challenge Employment for assisting him in his journey to completing his studies and gaining employment at Austral Monsoon – a job that he says he is really enjoying. He was particularly thankful for the engaging hands on experience, job hunting and interview processes that are all part of the Challenge Employment program. All of these techniques gave him that bit more confidence in himself when it came time to meet our team at Austral Monsoon Queensland.
Appointed by the City of Sydney Council, Cockram Constructions undertook the construction management of the Alexandra Canal Works Depot in the community subdivision at 67A Bourke Road, Alexandria. The purpose of the depot is to provide waste, maintenance and construction services for the southern city area. The building is 5 green star-rated and uses sustainability initiatives. These include natural ventilation and lighting, roof water collection and re-use, solar power, energy and water efficient equipment and locally produced products where possible.
Austral Monsoon were engaged by Cockram Constructions to supply and install 14 off Steel Roller Shutters of Various Sizes, 11 off 9m wide Counterbalanced Bifold Doors and 1 off Aluminium Countertop Grill. In order to maintain the 5 green star-rating, the glass panels in the Counterbalanced Bifold Doors were selected specifically for the thermal properties.
The Alexandra Canal Project showcases Austral Monsoons diverse product portfolio and ability to provide customers with a “one stop shop” by combining products that would need to be provided by separate contractors otherwise. To further emphasis this, Austral Monsson Building Products were also engaged to provide louvre systems for this project making this a significant project for the AM Group.
Group company Diamond Roll-Up Doors recently finished (800) door and (130) door orders for point of purchase display units for Pan Oston.
The units are used by a large retail chain for displaying product in their stores.
The design of the door was simplified to reduce cost and installation times. The use of the roll up door can actually reduce overall cost of the cabinet (quick installation and simple design), reduce space requirements for the display (no swing-out doors), and ensure security of the contents when not in use.

Tourists will soon be flying high over the Mornington Peninsula again, with the iconic Arthurs Seat chairlift attraction on track for a December opening.
The re-developed site is set to open in December and the new owners said the community was excited about the reimagined attraction and what it would do for the area.
Group Company Airport Doors has completed the supply and installation of a number of Roller Shutters and Bifold Doors at the new completed re-development.
CMV Truck & Bus are currently constructing a new building site for their new Derrimut Volvo, Mack and UD dealership. The construction and relocation process on the 80,000m2 site is located on the corner of Boundary and Mt Derrimut Roads, Derrimut Victoria.
Group company Ansa Doors has been awarded a major contract to supply and install over 130x H13 type Heavy Duty Steel roller shutters and 4x AB100 Type Bifold Doors.
The facility will provide:

• Administration and Support Offices
Ansa Doors are thrilled to be working with CMV Truck and Bus on the creation of their new building, it is anticipated the new home for CMV will be completed in March 2017.
Adjacent to the Brisbane CBD, South Brisbane & West End is undergoing an unprecedented urban renewal; featuring new apartment, commercial and office buildings.
In the 2016 calendar year a total of 37 projects commenced construction or had builders appointed. To date, 22 projects have been awarded to subcontractors, and group company Mirage Doors were successful in winning 16 of these projects.
The latest projects to be completed were for Pradstruct Builders at “Gardens” and “Parc” apartments near the riverfront at West End. All the projects typically have a steel roller shutter or counterweight door to the car park entries; and aluminium roller shutters to the store rooms, bin rooms and shopfront entries.
Builders involved with this work include Hutchinson Builders, Watpac, PBS, Pradstruct, Mirvac and Lend Lease. Our prospects are very bright for a similar result in 2017.
Group company – Airport Doors has recently completed the supply and installation of six (6) custom built Bifold Doors for the newly built Bunbury Fire Station, Western Australia.
Construction of the fire and rescue facility is nearing completion and is expected to open early in the new year. Emergency services will be better prepared to respond to disaster across Greater Bunbury when they move into a new $8 million home. The station will house both career and volunteer fire fighters with the potential to include a new State Emergency Services facility.
Group company – Diamond Roll Up Door, Inc. picked up an 800+ door order for a large national retailer project. Working with the display manufacturer, Diamond provided a solution for a roll up door on a point of purchase cabinet that met all of the manufacturer and end user requirements. In the design process Diamond was able to eliminate some of the standard components to both reduce cost and speed up installation time. The first 800 doors will ship in the month of November. More are expected throughout the year.
Group company Mirage Doors recently complete the supply and installation of S100 Steel Roller Shutters for Petrie Fire & Rescue Station in Queensland.
All Roller Shutters were Perforated and powdercoated both sides.
Group company Austral Monsoon has recently manufactured and installed a number of shutters for Lend Lease at the Barangaroo redevelopment on Sydney Harbour.
A total of six 100mm steel shutters were installed, featuring powder coated and fully perforated curtains.
